We have spent the last few weeks talking about the importance of insurance.  Insurance is one of the most important but least popular things to talk about when it comes to personal finance.  Why?  Because we typically only use insurance when we’re sick, after a car accident, something has been stolen from us, or mother nature has struck.   And as difficult as these events may be to deal with, not preparing for them properly (insuring against the events) can wipe out a lifetime of hard work and savings.

So, whether you are a young family, a home owner,  driver of a car or any of the any other scenarios that requires insurance coverage, get the appropriate coverage today.  Insurance is defensive personal finance, not offensive (like savings)  With out the proper defense, you just wont get very far.   And don’t procrastinate because you’re too young.  Risk doesn’t have an age.  It’s out there every day.

Here is what you can do in order to take the right steps:

1) Read What Types of Insurance Do You Really Need and see where you are.  This will allow you to review your own situation and determine where you are and what you need to fill in.

2) Figure out what you can budget for insurance costs.  This may require you to cut back on other areas.  If not it is simply a matter of reallocating to the kinds of insurance you don’t have.

3) Read How To Buy Insurance if You Are Self Employed - Don’t worry if you are self employed or not.  In this post I talk about the reasons you want to consider attaining insurance through an independent insurance agent versus a captive agent.

4) Begin; don’t procrastinate. Take it one step at a time.     Start making the phone calls and get the ball rolling.
