Working In Time Blocks – Getting Things Done

It’s 4:54 PM and before you leave the office your mind turns to the evening and the things you need to do:

-Work out
-Bills
-Blog
-Laundry
-emails
-add your own

The mission: You have 4 or 5 hours in the evening to get things done. I will guess you only manage to get to a very select few of these very important things done. So, you go back to the office the very next day and look at yesterday’s to do list only to have the same things on your list for the following evening. Why is this?

Well, if you are like the rest of us, you most likely dedicate too much time to one thing or you get easily distracted. Let me give you another approach to try out:

The Solution: When you get home tomorrow night, take your list out and dedicate a given amount of time to each item on your list. (i.e 30 minutes) Once that time is up, go onto the next thing on your list, one at a time, over and over. Leave about 1/2 hour at the end of the night to go back to anything you didn’t finish (ie. clothes in the dryer)

What you will discover is that since you’re mentally aware that you only have a certain amount of time for each “To Do” on your list, you will be more inclined to focus and get things done. You will be less likely to waste time and go in circles. This is the essence of discipline. I think discipline is critical to success. Here is a way you can practice discipline today.

Try this out and share your comments as to whether this works for you.
