Important Tax Dates for 2010
The beginning of the 2010 new year also means we have to file our income taxes for 2009. I put together the following calendar that can be used as a reference for W-2 workers. For a more complete list of the 2010 Tax Deadlines including those for self-employed workers, here the official 2010 IRS Tax Calendar.
February 1, 2010
W-2 Forms. These forms should have arrived from all past employers by Feb 1. The IRS requires that all employers and or contractors send these by January31st each year.
April 15th
Tax return date. This is the date that your 2009 federal tax return is due to the IRS. If you are unable to complete your return on time, you may file an extension.
File an extension – If you need additional time to file your 2009 tax return, you will need to file Form 4868. Once you file this form, you will have until October 15 to file your return. In order to avoid any penalties, you will still need to pay any tax that is due by April 15th.
Individual Retirement Accounts and Roth IRAs – This is also the deadline for making contributions to Traditional IRA’s and Roth IRAs.
June 15
Filing deadline. If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working (or on military duty) outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico, file Form 1040 and pay any tax, interest and penalties due. You can file for an extension until Oct. 15.
October 15
Income tax return due. Remember that your 2009 income tax return is due if you filed and extension with Form 4868.
December 31
Deduction deadline. This is the last date to make payments that can be deducted from your 2010 income tax return.
I hope you find these 2010 Tax Deadlines helpful.
