Today, I was listening to an interview of someone who has been massively successful in his industry. What is massively successful? He’s earned $40 million in his profession. That number isn’t as important as what he shared as the 2 main reasons for his success. Now of course you have to have your ladder leaning against the right house (industry) and have a well developed business plan that gives you clear steps to take. Considering those are all equal, the 2 major contributing factors to his success were:
A Laser Focus and Total Commitment
Focus
The successful person must have an extremely clear focus. This may sound very obvious – however, people have so many competing distractions in their life that they are never able to really focus on doing the activities and behaviors that lead to success in their chosen field. What you have to do is literally “put the blinders on” and focus on the things you have to do in order to take the necessary steps to reach incremental progress. If you are having a hard time understanding what I am referring to, imagine a race horse that has the “blinders over the sides of their eyes. This is done so the horse can cut out all distractions and focus on what is in front of him. Your personal life is no different. How many times are you telling those voices to stop?
Try this yourself by looking at your computer screen in 2 ways. First, look at the screen as you normally would. Do you notice all the distractions in your peripheral view? Next, place the palms of your hands along side your face (almost creating a tunnel between your eyes and the screen. Notice how much easier it is to focus this way. In whatever you are doing you need to be focused on whatever that objective is and make it a clear focus when you allocate time to working on it. This means not answering phone calls, emails, etc while doing this…
Commitment
Most people can’t commit to things because they believe there is either an easier way or a shortcut to how they are doing things now. Perhaps they believe there is a special secret or maybe that other people have some special gift. The truth is that in order to be successful you have to be absolutely consistent every day. THAT is the thing most people can’t or wont do. Do you really know what it means to really commit to something or are you just going through the motions? Once you decide what you want, you have to be willing to do the consistent actions every day.
There is no magic bullet or secrets out there. It is only when you get clearly focused on what you want and make a commitment to be consistent every day, that success enters the picture.
